Décolletage dos and don'ts: How to care for your cleavage

We lather on lotions and potions for our faces, and pamper our hands and feet, yet there is one oft-neglected spot that would benefit immensely from the same attention: our upper chests. Ann Marie MacDonald, president of Miracle 10 skincare, says “the skin on our chest does not contain as many hair follicles as the skin on our face. This means that the chest produces less sebum. Since sebum is responsible for making the skin supple, the chest tends to be drier, thinner and have less elasticity.”

Brush up on your upper chest know-how so you can bare it all—well, almost all.

DO choose skincare products that contain a combination of active ingredients to prevent and reverse the look of age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. MacDonald says, “Look for products that contain peptides, Retinol and lots of antioxidant and emolliating ingredients such as Vitamins A, D, and E, as well as Shea butter and seed extracts.”

Product pick: Miracle 10 Neck lift, $165, miracle10.com.

DO keep your chest hydrated. Bill Baker, CEO of Consonant skincare, recommends mixing some moisturizer (Ultra Moisturizing Organic Face Cream for Dry Skin) with a few drops of HydrExtreme and applying that to your décolletage and face daily.

Product pick: Consonant HydrExtreme, $72, consonantskincare.com.

DO apply sunscreen on your décolletage. MacDonald says that along with great skincare, sunscreen is “the best anti-aging product you can buy.”

Product pick: Vichy Capital Soleil Bare Skin Feel Lotion SPF 45, $40, vichy.ca.

DON'T use products that are harsh and drying because this area does not regenerate as quickly as facial skin.

DON'T forget to follow the same skincare routine that you apply to your face. That means washing, moisturizing to keep it hydrated and exfoliating with a gentle product to perk up dull skin.
