Mineral vs. traditional
According to makeup companies Jane Iredale and Pure + Simple Cosmetics, mineral makeup is pure, lacking talc and other fillers; allows the skin to breathe; is a natural sun protector; and can relieve skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. Mineral-based makeup is also gentler on skin, they say.

Where to buy it
• Try a Sephora store or www.sephora.com for a quality mineral foundation and powder line called Bare Escentuals, which has garnered lots of praise on the beauty blog Jolie in NYC.

• Shoppers Drug Mart carries Mineral FX ($37: www.shoppersdrugmart.com), which is talc free.

• Visit spas and dermatologist offices for the Jane Iredale cosmetics line, which also include lipsticks and eye shadows.

• Try shopping on the web. Derm Store and the Spa Boutique specialize in mineral makeup products.
