Discover fall's best makeup trends

Just like fashion, makeup looks get updated each season. As we head into fall, the bronzed looks of summer make way for more luxurious autumn colours. We checked in with Julia McEwen, senior fashion and beauty editor at Canadian Living magazine, to see what trends are leading the way this season.

Fall makeup: Get the look
"A rich and opulent, yet fresh and almost prep-school-ish face was seen in all the major fashion cities," says McEwen. "The look was almost bare but with a rich look of texture and subdued colour, pulling from a warm beige neutral palette. The standout component to this look is a flawless complexion."

This season, opt for soft beautifully blended colours. "This is the polar opposite of a hard-luxury look," McEwen says. "This look is more romantic and simple. It's low-key luxe."

"The classic-film-noir-meets-edgy-80s-rocker look breathed new life into the common smoky eye. The eye was more subtle and unexpected with an artistic and architectural twist on liner."

Runway trends
According to McEwen, red lips make a dramatic impact on the runways almost every fall season. This year was no exception. "This time around it was re-worked. The texture is tweaked. This usually formal shade should be worn in an informal manner. The crimson lip ranged from a pop of cherry red to a deep, dark oxblood."

And when it comes to brows, McEwen says it's all about clean arches – not too bushy and never over-tweezed. "Keep your brows full and natural looking," she advises.

Face and nails
"The flawless natural complexion is a must for fall," says McEwen. "This look is hard to achieve and takes a lot more makeup than you would think. It's all about blending and picking the perfect shades for your skin tone. Flushed full cheeks with a windswept quality brought a fresh face to the catwalks seen at Michael Kors and Thakoon."

Seasons past saw black nail polish take centre stage as the couleur du jour. But this season, its more muted counterpart is all the rage. "Go for a sleek, heather grey or try a 'greige', a combination of grey and beige" says McEwen. "Grey is truly the new black."

Colour: What's hot
Choosing the right colours to get the look this season is about knowing what to look for. McEwen says that all different shades of red are lighting up lips and grey nails will get your hands noticed. For eyes, she recommends shadows in a variety of soft hues, particularly violet and white.

Makeup bag must-haves
What three makeup products should you make sure you've got in your makeup bag? McEwen recommends:

1 A bottle of grey nail polish is a must. Nail varnish has become more than just a beauty product: It's a fashion statement and a fabulous accessory.

2 Red lipstick is a must for all occasions: casual, office and evening. It knows no bounds! It's essential for the season, and you can take it with you anywhere. It's the easiest beauty product to use if you want to transform your whole look with a single application.

3 A good-quality foundation. It takes a little experimenting to find your perfect shade and to discover what textures work best for you. Experiment with powder, cream, liquid or mineral.
