How to wear a pixie and classic bob cut
Cutting your hair short can be fun, fuss free and liberating – but it can also be a little scary, especially if you've had long hair for a while. Hairstyle trends come and go, but decade after decade these five short haircuts have endured.

We asked veteran stylist and Fiorio Salon owner Gianfranco Scavo to help us round up the best short haircuts of all time. He dishes on what makes them timeless and how you can tailor them to your hair type and length – and lifestyle!

1. The pixie
Iconic beauties Audrey Hepburn and Mia Farrow first put the pixie cut on the beauty map and today A-list actresses Halle Berry, Michelle Williams and Annette Bening keep the gamine look going strong.

"This is a very simple cut – it doesn't require a lot of styling," says Scavo. The pixie is great for all hair textures with the exception of very tight curls. Since a pixie cut puts the spotlight squarely on your facial features, it's best suited for those with defined cheekbones and oval-shaped faces.

To keep it modern, the edges should be soft and feminine. "The hair is cut around the hairline so it looks almost like it fades into the skin – there are no blunt edges," says Scavo. "Even though this crop is very short, it can still be soft and feminine." says Scavo. If you do go for this look, invest in a gel or a pomade to help you style shorter strands – these types of products will add manageability and shine to your hair.

2. The classic bob

From 1920s silent film star Louise Brooks to Keira Knightley and Helen Mirren today, women have been wearing their hair in bold, angled bobs for decades.

This timeless cut suits faces of all shapes and sizes because the length can easily be adjusted up and down, like a hemline. Longer faces should wear a bob that ends above the chin to balance their features; rounder faces can have the cut fall just below the chin to elongate their features.

All textures, including curly hair, can be cut into a classic bob. "That's why it's been around for so long – it's easy for most people to wear," says Scavo.
