I have very dry, itchy skin. I use moisturizer every day in the morning and at night. My thyroid level is low and I know that plays a part. Can you tell me what types of moisturizer I should use?

Low thyroid levels certainly make the skin dry but if there is no redness and it is just dry and scaly you need to think about a couple of things: • Avoid soaps that are drying. Sometimes using non-soap cleansers such as Spectrojel®, Spectroderm® or Cetaphil® can help because they don't irritate or remove so much oil from the skin. (Read more at www.MildCleanser.ca) • In general, the stickier the moisturizer the more effective it is. Vaseline jelly works the best but is difficult to use in the daytime. • Moisturizers that have lactic acid and urea added are effective because these ubstances bind water to the skin. Try visiting your pharmacy and have a look at the various options. Richard Thomas, MD
