Answers from Expert: Dr. Richard Thomas, MD, FRCPC

Many years ago, I bought one of those "shavers" that pull hair out by the roots so that you don't have to shave as often. Unfortunately, whether due to my fair, sensitive skin or a default in the product, I developed ingrown hairs. I have soft, wispy hairs that don't seem strong enough to grow up through the surface of my skin. I develop sores that scar and have stopped wearing shorts and skirts due to the scarring on my one leg. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the scarring and stop the ingrown hairs?

If you have a question for any of our experts, please visit our Just Ask page. Pulling out hairs tends to twist the hair sheath, increasing the risk of ingrown hairs. Waxing and plucking also fall into this category. Shaving may not be so bad, especially if you don't shave to close to the skin. The hairs that are cut just above the skin are less likely to get caught in the skin. As for your scars, they tend to improve with time but it is difficult to give specific advice about your scars without seeing them. I would suggest that you see a dermatologist to discuss your options. Richard Thomas, MD
