What is a keloid and how do you treat it?
A keloid is excessive scar tissue. There are cells called fibroblasts that make collagen to repair an injury. In keloids, the collagen factory has essentially become far to active in producing scar tissue. These are benign.
There are a number of treatments that try and stop the process:
• Inject cortisone into the scar. You may know that strong cortisones may thin the skin which is exactly what you want.
• Laser treatment can be considered.
• Cutting out the scar does risk making it grow back bigger. If it is cut out, which I do not usually recommend, injecting the new scar with cortisone or using aldara cream may inhibit new scar formation.
A dermatologist would be most experienced in dealing with such a problem, so I suggest that you have it looked at for options.
