There are excellent dermatologists in both Edmonton and Calgary which your family physician can refer them to. If this is in fact eczema, there are a number of things to do, including: • Avoid using soap • Avoid fabric softeners. • Moisturize the skin at least three times a day -- vaseline (petroleum jelly) at night and unscented cold cream in the day There are a number of prescription medications that can be very helpful, including mild cortisone cream, which if used as directed will be fine. Newer topical treatments include Elidel and Protopic. The skin can often become infected and may need an antibiotic, while the itch needs to be controlled with low doses of antihistamines.
