Under $100: Best buys for August

As we get closer to September, our editors are thinking about end-of-summer purchases and fall trends. As always, these picks are under $100.

 Subtly stained

null

Glossier Generation G in Like, $20, glossier.com.

When it comes to my makeup philosophy, I tend to come back to buzzwords like “natural” and “effortless." What does this mean? I favour natural-looking mascara, pinched-pink cheeks, a subtle highlight and just the faintest swatch of lip colour on a daily basis. And you’ll find no other natural-but-better lip stain than new-to-Canada-brand Glossier and its General G. This matte stain is buildable, easy to apply and comes in six moisturizing shades. My pick is “Like,” a soft pink that adds just a touch of colour in these waning summer days—but I’m so in love with this product that I plan on stocking up on a few more shades. Maybe a little “Crush” or “Jam” for fall? – Alexandra Donaldson, Contributing editor

Frizz Free

null

John Frieda Frizz Ease® Forever Smooth Frizz Immunity Shampoo and Conditioner, $13 each, shoppersdrugmart.ca.

The first brand that comes to mind when talking about fighting frizz is John Frieda. The OG Frizz Ease silicone serum has been fighting the good fight against frizz for over 25 years. That being said, they’ve learned some new tricks. Every major hair stylist, including the brand’s ambassador and celebrity stylist Harry Josh will tell you that styling your hair starts in the shower. The new Frizz Ease Forever Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner treats the inside and outside of your hair with a technology which binds proteins inside the hair strand regulating the moisture content—too much moisture swells the strands and creates frizz and not enough makes hair brittle. – Julia McEwen, Fashion & Beauty Director

Relaxed denim

Mid rise best girlfriend jeans, $80, gapcanada.ca.

A pair of go-to jeans is a must-have at all times but most especially on those lazy summer days. Not only are they incredibly versatile, the girlfriend jean is meant to fit loose around the hips and thigh, which makes it the perfect choice for all your summer adventures. – Kaysey Davis, style intern

The extras

null

Dress with fringe sleeves, $46, zara.com.

The term “extra” has never been used to describe my style—but I have so say I love a simple silhouette with just a touch of interesting detail. A major trend for fall is embellishment—like embroidery, shimmer and fringe—so I’ll be looking to add the trend to my wardrobe, in a minimalist way of course. My affordable pick is this dress that has a figure-flattering belted waist and just a bit of fringe detailing on the sleeve. Perfect for someone who wouldn’t dream of adding too much extra, but who wouldn’t mind on adding just a little bit of flair. - AD

Bold and beautiful

null

Metal flower earrings, $13, hm.com.

Worn casual or dressy it doesn’t really matter, the most major accessory story for the last year is bold statement earrings to wear IRL. On the market we’re seeing pairs, singles but all of them are large and in charge. If your lobes can’t handle something that dusts your shoulders try a statement stud, like these vivid red blooms from H&M. - JM

Beach days

Missguided Beach Bum Slogan Straw Bag, $45, asos.com.

August marks the last full month of summer, which means your beach days are limited. Whether you’re relaxing seaside on a tropical beach for your summer vacation or spending a few hours at your local beach, hit the beach in style with a great beach bag. This straw bag is not only adorable but also very spacious. Paired with a great cover up and sun hat and you’re set. cover up and sun hat and you’re set. - KD

Wine not?

Agrecien loafers, $50, callitspring.com.

Though I haven’t been back to school in years, this time of year still always reminds me of getting ready for that next academic year. On my back-to-school shopping list was always a new pair of shoes, usually comfortable flats or sneakers I could wear pretty much every day. The adult version looks a little like this: a wine-coloured loafer in velvet with metallic detailing. At just $50, I may even get the sparkly version too. - AD

Glow getter

null

Charlotte Tilbury’s new Overnight Bronze & Glow Mask, $65, charlottetilbury.com.

Charlotte Tilbury’s new Overnight Bronze & Glow mask may have a steep price tag ($65) but in this editor’s opinion it is worth every cent. It’s easy to use, super hydrating and leaves you with a beautiful glow in the morning. In fact every time I apply it people ask me if I just got back from vacation, which is the complete opposite of people asking if you’re tired, am I right? - JM

Throw shade

Quay ‘My Girl' 50mm cat eye sunglasses, $72, nordstrom.com.

Sunglasses are an absolute must have for the summer. Not only do they protect the sensitive skin around your eyes—which is more prone to sun damage and signs of aging—but they also look fabulous. I’m a huge fan of the cat eye shape when it comes to summer shades. I love this pair from Quay Australia because they’re bit more oversized and suit my face shape. I also love the variety of colours they come in. The black frames with the reflective blue lenses are my favourite. - KD

Firming Massage Brush Head, $79, clarisonic.ca.

A trip down the aisle later this month means that I’m taking my skin care very seriously—it is after all the only time I’ve paid a photographer to take about a million photographs of me. Which means that I’m diving deep into the world of facial massage. Helping me is Clarisonic’s Firming Massage Brush Head, which visibly improves signs of aging on the face, neck and décolleté. It also promotes lymphatic drainage and stimulates blood flow so that I can reap the benefits of a brighter, tighter complexion come my wedding day. If you already have a Smart Profile Clairisonic, then the brush head is available to purchase separately. - AD

Walk the line

‘Brelawien’ high heel sandals in Navy, $50, callitpsring.com.

I bought these shoes to go to a wedding and now I want to get them in every single colour. I’m currently lusting over this soft navy colour. They’re comfortable, go with pretty much everything in my wardrobe and extremely flattering at elongating legs. - JM

Pretty in purple

null

Smashbox be legendary lipstick in Violet Riot, $25, sephora.com.

A purple lip is a makeup essential when it comes to my beauty routine. I will choose a deep plum lip over any other shade except during the summer when I go for a lighter shade of purple—for variety. I love this shade from Smashbox, called Violet Riot, because it still has that purple hue but is still really bright and colourful. It makes the perfect summer shade. - KD

Sweet sentiment

null

Gigmey necklace, starting at $27, etsy.com/shop/gigmey.

I’m a sucker for sentimental jewellery, and I never met a delicate necklace I didn’t like. It’s never been easier to personalize your purchases thanks to shopping sites like Etsy, and I took full advantage when choosing a new wear-everywhere necklace. This simple dainty chain and round disk make for a great layering piece, and with the option to customize the length of the chain and engrave the small pendant, it’s completely one-of-a kind too. - AD

Powderpuff

null

Wonder plus the Wowder brush, $35, glossier.com.

As of last month the beloved millennial pink branded cosmetics company from NYC, Glossier, finally launched shipping to Canada (they’re still holding out in Quebec—but they’re working on it). A few weeks later Glossier launched one of its most anticipated products since inception: Wowder. This lightweight powder fills a need for customers who are looking to sop up oil, set makeup and help give pores a blurred effect. - JM
