Think twice about trends
Uggs, last winter's must-have, are already being phased out in favour of moccasin boots. Peggy Campbell has sold shoes at Aldo's Dartmouth, N.S., store for more than three years and has seen her share of shoe trends come and go. She says some styles go out quickly, while others seem built to last. A shoe that never seems to go out of style is the square-toed classic pump with a thicker heel. "It's the business look," says Campbell. Any shoe termed "classic" -- such as the classic tall black boot or classic pump -- suggests the shoe has staying power.
Toe and heel
Heels come in every conceivable width and height these days, so there should be a heel for everyone. "Last year's four-inch heel was less popular," says Campbell. "Women are looking more for comfort now." If you can stand it and feel you need the extra height boost, there are still plenty of high-heeled shoes out there. If you haven't gotten over your fear of heights, the new kitten heel is gaining popularity as a lower, but still fashionable, option. When it comes to toe shapes, Campbell says there are three main styles: pointy, round and square. Your choice should be based on preference, purpose and lifestyle.
Look for multitasking
Every woman should have a shoe that can be worn with any outfit, in any situation. Campbell suggests something in a pointy toe for this purpose. "The pointy toe is so versatile and is only getting more popular," she says. "Women are buying their winter boots with a pointy toe." She says a good pointy-toed shoe or boot looks good with jeans, a business suit or a dress or skirt.
In the end, the shoes that you decide upon have to please only one person, and that's you. Make sure that the shoes you buy fit your lifestyle and once you've found your perfect fit, be sure to take good care of them. If you love the boots -- or shoes -- you're walking in, they'll never go out of style.
