Christmas in Kamloops

It's Christmas with a twist in Kamloops, British Columbia! I have lots of time for folks who carve out their own traditions.  My hometown of Phelpston, Ontario, used to host the annual Out House Races each July 1.  Granted, I imagine some people thought we were a little bit odd – but we had a blast. It brought the town together and, for a short while, put my little hamlet of 150 people on the map. I reckon there's a kinship between my quirky hometown and Kamloops, B.C., which I discovered has a few holiday traditions that are definitely one-of-a-kind. Kamloops, British Columbia, Christmas   BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops just launched its annual Wildlights show, which runs until January 5, 2014. Don't expect to look up and see visions of sugar plums dance across the night sky above Kamloops. Crafty volunteers have engineered multi-coloured lights in the forms of the western rattlesnake, grizzly bears and other assorted wild creatures. (Where there's a grizzly, I don't image you'll see tiny Rudolph!). I totally love this kind of local custom.   christmas Kamloops   Another Yuletide option in Kamloops that's grabbing my attention: winery tours in December. Totally off my radar at Christmas. Who knew? Privato Winery and Vineyard offers tastings in its cellar followed by hayrides out to a Christmas tree farm to fetch a tree. The outing is topped off with a mug of hot chocolate around the bon fire. Works for me. And Harper’s Trail Winery , on the banks of the South Thompson River, hosts festive tastings every weekend until Dec. 22. Christmas in Kamloops I've no idea how the folks in Kamloops feel about out-house races. I must ask.
