Our guide to wearing bold lip colour

At Vera Wang it was raspberry, at Fendi it was plum and at Bottega Veneta it was cranberry. Whether high shine or matte, berry-hued lip shades lit the fall 2013 catwalks on fire.

Getting the runway look in real life, however, can be tricky. Colour bleeding and feathering are ever-present concerns when wearing strong shades – until now. Plutino Group makeup artist Jodi Urichuk offers her expertise on how to keep your bold lipstick in place and look fabulous all day long.

1. Exfoliate your kisser

Before you actually apply anything to them, Urichuk advises exfoliating and moisturizing your lips. The skin on the lips needs maintenance, especially if you want to apply a vibrant colour and prevent dry patches.

2. Choose the ideal tint

The key to getting the perfect pout is choosing the right shade. According to Urichuk, “most of these berry or jewel shades have cool undertones, so neutral or cool skin is more suited to them.” She recommends that people with warmer skin tones opt for colours with a yellow pigment.

3. Use a lip liner

“Using a colourless pencil will keep the colour inside the lip line and prevent any feathering. It also fills in fine lines,” explains Urichuk.

To further extend the wear of your lipstick, use a lip liner in the shade of your lipstick to fill in your entire lips, then “apply lipstick, blot with a tissue and apply another coat,” she says. You can even dust translucent powder on your lips prior to applying the lip liner.

4. Take baby steps

If you like the idea of sporting a daring colour but you’re not sure if you’re ready to take the plunge, opt for a lip stain or balm instead.

“It’s a great option to ensure a more natural splash of colour – like you've just eaten a bowl of cherries,” says Urichuk.
