Caterers always serve some type of meaty skewer for good reason: They're so easy to assemble, take mere minutes to cook and are consistently one of the first items to disappear. To make thin, even slices easily, freeze the steaks until firm, 15 to 20 minutes, before cutting.

Method

Slice steaks crosswise into about 1/4-inch (5 mm) thick strips. Toss together steak, ginger, five-spice powder, salt and pepper until coated.

Thread steak onto metal or soaked wooden skewers; arrange on lightly greased rimmed baking sheet. Brush both sides with hoisin sauce. Broil (without turning) until medium-rare, about 6 minutes.
