You will need to make this three times in order to have enough to make the fireplace. Bake and work with one sheet at a time, while it's still warm, cutting out the pieces for the fireplace. Once cooled, these cookie sheets are too brittle to cut smoothly.

In bowl, beat butter with sugar until fluffy; beat in vanilla and salt. With wooden spoon, stir in flour, 1 cup at a time, to make dry, crumbly dough. Stir in chocolate chips.

Using hands, knead dough just until mixture holds together; pat evenly into parchment paper–lined 17- x 11-inch (45 x 29 cm) rimmed baking sheet. Cover with plastic wrap and, using rolling pin, roll surface to smooth and press to edges. Remove plastic wrap.

Bake in 325 F (160 C) oven until firm to the touch and edges begin to turn golden, 30 to 34 minutes. Let cool in pan on rack for 6 minutes.

Place large cutting board on top of pan and invert cookie onto board; remove baking sheet and peel off parchment paper. Cut out pieces as directed while still warm.

Tip from The Test Kitchen: To cover an entire face of the fireplace with candy to resemble brick or rock work, pipe icing onto a piece and smooth using an offset palette knife. Work with a small space at a time so that the icing doesn't dry out.
