Like mother like daughter: Raising a role model

How this mom plans to use Mother’s Day as a way to teach her daughter about caring for others.

As told by Trisha Enriquez of No Tummy Mummy

Blogger, fitness guru & mom extraordinaire, Trisha Enriquez has made a mark on social media. Even so, it’s what happens away from the screen that is most important to her: family and the power of human connection.

A trendsetter in her own right, Trisha is breaking ties with traditional Mother’s Day thinking and utilizing the calendar event for more than flower arrangements; this mom is taking ownership over the holiday as an occasion for role modeling. Top on her agenda: model kindness and compassion to her daughter. Volunteering and charity “makes us closer as a family,” she says. “We’re able to give back together and spend our time doing things that make a difference.”

Read below for her tips on raising little change-makers, plus her thoughts on why the spirit of Mother’s Day should shine year-long!

And consider inspiring kids to give gifts they can feel good about giving, such as one of ME to WE’s handmade Mother’s Day gift ideas that help empower moms around the world.

How to be a role model this Mother’s Day:

Teach by example…

One lesson I would like my daughter to say she learned from me is to always be kind to others and treat everyone with respect. Recently, my four-year-old daughter noticed I was upset and made me a little card on her own to show me how much she loves me! She [also] teaches me something new every single day. I catch myself being so rushed, and she has said to me so many times, “mom why are you so rushed.” One lesson I’ve learned [from her] is that I need to slow down. She’s taught me a lot about being present and trying to be in the moment.

Never forget the impact you have on your child’s perspective…

Among the most important roles a mother plays is the call to nurture and influence. Our children are always watching how we act in the home, how we speak and take care of family and others, as well as actions we perform in the community. We have the power to create compassionate children simply by showing them that every day is an opportunity to give back in small, meaningful ways. As a result, we can build a better world.

Make charity and volunteerism a family affair…

This could just be by acknowledging strangers in the coffee shop [and] paying for someone’s coffee. This is something we are trying now. We’re buying a stranger a coffee when we go, and she [my daughter] thinks it’s really fun because she gets to ask them what they want for their coffee. It’s creating that human connection. Looking at people as one, as equals, treating them with kindness and respect.

Be inspirational…

Mothers are given the incredible opportunity to influence the next generation by what we do each and every day. My mother inspired me to always work hard for what I want! And here I am pushing myself to keep going with following my dream… even if it means some late nights and early mornings. [For my daughter], we always teach her to follow through, to never give up. Especially in sports, she plays soccer, [we encourage her] not to get down on herself when she’s not winning.

Add on tip for the kids! Don’t wait till Mother’s Day to show appreciation…

I think it would be wonderful for children to show their mothers gratitude 365 days a year; a simple “thank you” goes a long way!
