5 things to do to make back-to-school season a breeze

By:

After a well-deserved summer break, it’s time to get back into a daily routine and implement a few practices that'll help simplify your busy life.

After having a couple of months with the kids out of school, spending long weekends at the cottage, and visiting friends and family on days off, September can feel like a back-to-reality whiplash. The good news is finding your back-to-school and back-to-work routine doesn’t have to be difficult—even if you’ll miss your cottage weekends.

Set yourself up for success by mastering a few tricks, with a little help from Bee Maid and their 300 Canadian Beekeepers, to help you get your fall routine sorted.

1. Pre-make breakfast.
You have a million things to do in the morning, so simplifying breakfast can by prepping it ahead of time can make your AMs a little less chaotic. We recommend making a batch of fuss-free healthy granola—whether in the form of bars for an on-the-run meal or loose on its own and paired with yogurt and fruit. Sweeten your granola with honey, instead of sugar, for a healthier and nourishing alternative, without sacrificing any sweetness. Try Canadian Living's Crunchy Honey Wasabi Granola or Granola Bars.

2. Invest in lunch packaging essentials to help you feel good all day.
There are products that can make your life easier and help keep you motivated to stick your healthy routine. Case in point? Bento Box tupperware can make it easier for you to bring a nutritious, homemade lunch to work, and a glass water bottle can encourage and allow you to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

3. Hydrate and nourish yourself the right way throughout the day.
Instead of reaching for a specialty latte and a cookie when the 3pm hunger pangs strike, opt for tea, with a dash of honey if you like it sweet, and for a snack, some crudité. If you tend to crave something sweet for an afternoon pick-me-up, pre-make energy balls, like Canadian Living's Zesty Chocolate Energy Bites. You can take some to work and your kids can have some when they get home from school.

4. Prep your dinner protein the night before.
You’ve heard it before: Meal-prepping is the best way to keep you on track with your healthy eating goals and save time, but it's not always easy. If you only have time to do one quick dinner prep, pre-marinade your proteins. The night before, make Canadian Living's Lemon Herb-Rubbed Trout or Cilantro-Jalapeno Grilled Tofu or try Bee Maid's Honey Lime Chicken Skewers, and let it marinade overnight. The next evening, all you have to do when you get home is pop it in the oven, cook some vegetables and dinner is ready.

5. Establish a nighttime routine that helps you feel good.
The best way to set yourself up for a productive day is by taking care of yourself the night before. Whether your nighttime routine includes reading with the kids, meditating, taking a little self-care time with a body scrub (like Bee Maid's Honey Scrub) or having a soak in a salt bath, or enjoying a cup of tea or glass of wine, your nighttime routine will help you wind down and chill out, so you can tackle tomorrow.
