Family Friendly Montreal - Day 2
Make a family getaway to Montreal this summer. In the cultural heart of French Canada, there is plenty to do for the young (and young at heart) – from insects to Shakespeare and everything in between. Here are Canadian Living’s Montreal must-sees for families:
Day 2 – Morning
BEST FOR KIDS WHO AREN’T SQUEAMISH (Montreal Insectarium, 4581 rue Sherbrooke Est, 514-872-1400, www.espacepourlavie.ca/en/insectarium)
The Montreal Insectarium, located next to the Montreal Botanical Garden in Maisonneuve Park, is one of the world’s largest insect museums. This exhibition showcases over 160,000 creepy, crawly creatures. Kids will enjoy gazing at the ant farm, beehives, butterflies, beetles and more. The squeamish can head on over to the museum’s collection of dead insects. Be sure to track down one of the passionate entomologists or nature interpreters around the grounds: they’re always on hand to teach visitors. The Insectarium also has an outdoor discovery zone with games and activities designed around the theme of insect habitats.
What the guide books don’t tell you: Admission to the Insectarium includes access to the Montreal Botanical Garden. However, you must visit both attractions on the same day.
Best time to go: In the morning, when many of the insects are most active.
Day 2 – Afternoon or Evening
BEST FOR THE OUTDOORSY FAMILY (Montreal Botanical Garden, 4101 Sherbooke E., 514-872-1400, www.espacepourlavie.ca/en/botanical-garden)
If you’re looking to get a little fresh air, head to Maisonneuve Park to visit the Montreal Botanical Garden, which is home to over 22,000 plant, tree and flower species from around the world. You can spend the day getting lost in over 190 acres of green space: spotting birds, butterflies and turtles, or exploring colourful greenhouses and over thirty thematic, tranquil gardens. Highlights include the Chinese Garden (largest in the world outside of China), Japanese Garden (check out the traditional tea ceremony), First Nations Garden, Alpine Garden and more. Kids will be sure to enjoy the Poisonous Plants Garden, Tropical Food Plants Greenhouse and the lantern festival in September/October.
