Savouring September

As the calendar turns to September, our ingrained sense of timing from years spent prepping for school begins to sound a slow gong in our heads. Ding, dong, summer’s over. Dong, ding, fall is here.

If this depresses you, you’re not alone. But it’s worth remembering that summer extends almost to the end of this month, and there are still lots of joys to be had. Case in point: all that delicious local produce that requires long weeks of warm, sunny days to become juicy, ripe and full of flavour. We’re talking peaches, plums, tomatoes and peppers, among many others—those ingredients that make up some of the best dishes this bridge season has to offer.

We’re celebrating that harvest with a veritable cornucopia of inventive recipes this issue. From the rustic tart on our cover that features sweet peaches to the fresh ideas in our entertaining story (see “Tomato Tomato,” page 72) that highlight—you guessed it— tomatoes to the new ways with broccoli and sweet peppers in our “Veggie Rich” story on page 84, we’ve got fruit- and veggie-forward delights that will have you smacking your lips in anticipation.

Best of all? Pretty much every recipe is easy-peasy to make, leaving you more time to linger on the deck or patio with a well-deserved glass of wine. We can’t think of a better way to revel in the glow of these waning summer days. Can you?
