I must say, I was disappointed at the lack of nail art seen backstage at New York fashion week. Although there was a serious shortage of artistic nails, there were a few highlights. The nail art look du jour? Geometric shapes and clean lines, which translate to achievable looks that can be recreated in the comfort of your living room, no nail appointment required. The Wes Gordon show had one of my favourite nail looks. Canadian nail pro, Rita Remark keyed the show for Essie. To create this look, Remark used two coats of Essie’s Smoking Hot, which is a purple grey hybrid. The shine was dulled with a matte top coat, and to give the nails an accent Essie’s Sexy Divide, a true purple, was applied in the centre of each tip. Legendary manicurist (and total sweetheart) Jin Soon Choi brought an Adirondack inspired manicure to the Prabal Gurung runway. She added a simple touch of nail art—which was a rare backstage sight this season—using grey and navy enamel that Gurung designed for the Sally Hansen, the three polish collection will launch in September of this year. “Grey is will be huge this fall,” says Choi. She added that it’s well on it’s way to replacing nude nails, “it’s the new neutral.” All of the models had a cement grey polish, some of the models had a navy vertical line in the centre of the nails, while other models only had the three middle fingers on the left hand.
