Pullover is worked in stocking stitch throughout. Instructions are written for Size 4. Any changes for sizes 6, 8 and 10 are written in brackets. If there is only one set of figures, it applies to all sizes. Standard abbreviations are used. Recommended for knitters with some experience.

Note: When working charts, work knit rows (right side) from right to left and purl rows from left to right. Wind small balls of the colours to be used, one for each separate area of colour. When changing colours, twist the 2 colours around each other where they meet, on wrong side, to avoid a hole.

You need:
Patons Shetland Chunky 75% acrylic/25% wool yarn (100 g) as follows:

FLOWERED VERSION WITH STRIPED RIBBING
Main colour (MC), Black 03040, 4(5,5,6) balls
Contrast colour A, Amethyst 03315, 1 ball
Contrast colour B, Blue Zircon 03734, 1 ball
Contrast colour C, Plum Crazy 03728, 1 ball

PLAIN VERSION WITH STRIPED RIBBING
Main colour (MC), Amethyst 03315, 5(5,6,7) balls
Contrast colour A, Black 03040, 1 ball

Main colour (MC), Blue Zircon 03734, 5(6,7,8) balls

One pair of 4.5 mm needles
One pair of 6 mm needles OR whichever needles you require to produce the tension given below
Matching zipper, 15 cm (6 ins) long

Tension
15 sts and 20 rows = 10 cm (4 ins) in stocking stitch using larger needles.

FLOWERED VERSION WITH STRIPED RIBBING

To make:

Back
With A and smaller needles, cast on 53(57,61,65) sts.
**Row 1 (right side): K1, [p1,k1] to end of row.
Row 2: With MC, p1, [k1,p1] to end of row.
Row 3: With MC, as given for Row 1.
Row 4: With B, as given for Row 2.
Row 5: With B, as given for Row 1.
Row 6: With MC, as given for Row 2.
Row 7: With MC, as given for Row 1.
Row 8: With C, as given for Row 2.
Row 9: With C, as given for Row 1.
Row 10: With MC, as given for Row 2.
Row 11: With MC, as given for Row 1.
Row 12: With A, as given for Row 2.
Row 13: With A, as given for Row 1.**
Row 14 (wrong side): With MC, purl, inc 4 sts evenly across row. 57(61,65,69) sts now in row.

Change to larger needles and work Chart 1 in St st, shaping as indicated for back neck.

Front
Work as given for Back, shaping as indicated on Chart 1 as follows:

To shape right front:
Row 63(67,67,71) (right side): Knit across 28(30,32,34) sts; leave these sts on spare needle. Cast off next st (centre st) and knit 28(30,32,34) sts.
Work 23 rows even as indicated on chart, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape right neck:
Next row: Cast off 5(6,6,7) sts (neck edge), knit to end of row.
Work 1 row even. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 3 rows, then on foll 2(2,3,3) alt rows. 18(19,20,21) sts now on needle.
Work 6(4,4,4) rows even, ending with wrong side facing for next row.

To shape right shoulder:
Cast off 9(9,10,10) sts at beg of next row.
Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 9(10,10,11) sts.

With wrong side facing, join yarn to 28(30,32,34) sts on spare needle and purl to end of row.
Work 23 rows even as indicated on chart, ending with wrong side facing for next row.

To shape left neck:
Next row: Cast off 5(6,6,7) sts (neck edge) and purl to end of row.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 3 rows, then on foll 2(2,3,3) alt rows. 18(19,20,21) sts now on needle.
Work 5(3,3,3) rows even, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape left shoulder:
Cast off 9(9,10,10) sts at beg of next row.
Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 9(10,10,11) sts.

Sleeves
With A and smaller needles, cast on 29(31,31,33) sts.
Work from ** to ** as given for Back.
Row 14 (wrong side): With MC, purl, inc 12 sts evenly across row. 41(43,43,45) sts now on needle.

Change to larger needles and work Chart 2 in St st.

Hood
With MC and larger needles, cast on 63(67,69,71) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of needle on 3rd row once, then on every foll row until 57(61,63,65) sts on needle.
Work even until work from beg measures 29(31,32,33) cm/11-1/2 (12,12-1/2,13) ins, ending with right side facing for next row. Cast off.

Fold Hood in half so wrong sides are tog and sew cast-off edge tog at top.

Hood edging
With right side facing, MC and smaller needles, pick up and knit 85(91,95,97) sts along front edge of Hood. Beg with Row 2, work 1 row [k1,p1] ribbing as given for Back.
With MC, work 2 rows [k1,p1] ribbing.
With A, work 2 rows [k1,p1] ribbing. Cast off in rib.

Front edging
With right side facing, MC and smaller needles, pick up and knit 21 sts down left front edge to centre cast-off st and 21 sts up right front edge to neck edge. 42 sts now on needle. Cast off knitwise.

To finish:
Sew shoulder seams. Sew cast-on edge of hood to neck edge of garment. Shortening zipper to 13 cm/5 ins, sew zipper under front edging. Place markers 19(20.5,21.5,23) cm /7-1/2(8,8-1/2,9) ins down from shoulder seams on front and back side edges. Sew Sleeves between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams. Block; do not press.

PLAIN VERSION WITH STRIPED RIBBING

Pocket lining
With MC and larger needles, cast on 33(35,37,39) sts and work 10(12,12,14) rows in St st, ending with right side facing for next row; leave these sts on spare needle.

Front
***With A and smaller needles, cast on 53(57,61,65) sts.
****Row 1 (right side): K1, [p1,k1] to end of row.
Row 2: With MC, p1, [k1,p1] to end of row.
Row 3: With MC, work as given for Row 1.
Row 4: With A, work as given for Row 2.
Row 5: With A, work as given for Row 1.
Rep rows 2 through 5 twice more.****
Row 14 (wrong side): With MC, purl, inc 4 sts evenly across row. 57(61,65,69) sts now on needle.***

Change to larger needles and work even in St st for 10(12,12,14) rows, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape pocket opening:
Next row: Slip first 12(13,14,15) sts onto st holder. Join yarn to rem sts, k33(35,37,39), turn; leave rem 12(13,14,15) sts on second st holder.
Work 21(25,25,27) rows, ending with right side facing for next row; leave sts on spare needle. Break yarn.

To finish pocket lining:
With right side facing, join yarn and knit first 12(13,14,15) sts on st holder, 33(35,37,39) sts of pocket lining and 12(13,14,15) sts on second st holder. 57(61,65,69) sts now on needle.

Work 21(25,25,27) rows even, ending with right side facing for next row.

To join Front and pocket lining:
Next row: K12(13,14,15), [k2tog, taking 1 st from pocket opening and 1 st from pocket lining] 33(35,37,39) times, knit to end of row. 57(61,65,69) sts now on needle.
Work even until work from beg measures 27(32,36,41) cm/10-1/2(12-1/2,14,16) ins, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape right front:
Next row: K28(30,32,34); leave these sts on spare needle. Cast off next st (centre st) and k28(30,32,34).
Work 23 rows even, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape right neck:
Next row: Cast off 5(6,6,7) sts (neck edge), knit to end of row.
Work 1 row even.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 3 rows, then on foll 2(2,3,3,) alt rows. 18(19,20,21) sts now on needle.
Work 6(4,4,4) rows even, ending with wrong side facing for next row.

To shape right shoulder:
Cast off 9(9,10,10) sts at beg of next row.
Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 9(10,10,11) sts.

To shape left front:
With wrong side facing, join yarn to rem 28(30,32,34) sts and purl to end of row. Work 23 rows even, ending with wrong side facing for next row.

To shape left neck:
Next row: Cast off 5(6,6,7) sts (neck edge). Knit to end of row.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 3 rows, then on foll 2(2,3,3) alt rows. 18(19,20,21) sts now on needle.
Work 5(3,3,3) rows even, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape shoulder:
Cast off 9(9,10,10) sts at beg of next row.
Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 9(10,10,11) sts.

Back
Work from *** to *** as given for Front.

Change to larger needles and work even in St st until work from beg measures same length as Front to shoulder shaping, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape shoulders:
Cast off 9(9,10,10) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 9(10,10,11) sts at beg of foll 2 rows. Cast off rem 21(23,25,27) sts.

Sleeves
With A and smaller needles, cast on 29(31,31,33) sts.
Work from **** to **** as given for Front.
Row 14: With MC, purl, inc 12 sts evenly across row. 41(43,43,45) sts now on needle.

Change to larger needles and work in St st, inc 1 st at each end of needle on 5th row once, then on every foll 4th row until 51(55,59,59) sts on needle, then on every foll 6th row until 57(61,65,69) sts on needle.

Cont even until work from beg measures 28(33,38,41) cm/11(13,15,16) ins, ending with right side facing for next row. Cast off.

Hood
Work as given for Flowered Version with Striped Ribbing.

Hood edging
With right side facing, A and smaller needles, pick up and knit 85(91,95,97) sts along front edge of Hood. Beg with Row 2, work 1 row [k1,p1] ribbing as given for Back.

With MC, work 2 rows [k1,p1] ribbing.
With A, work 2 rows [k1,p1] ribbing. Cast off in ribbing.

Front edging
Work as given for Flowered Version with Striped Ribbing.

Pocket borders
With right side facing, A and smaller needles, pick up and knit 19(21,21,25) sts along top edge of pocket. Beg with Row 2, work [k1,p1] ribbing as given for Back.
With MC, work 2 rows [k1,p1] ribbing.
With A, work 2 rows [k1,p1] ribbing. Cast off in ribbing.

To finish:
Finish as given for Flowered Version with Striped Ribbing. Sew sides of pocket borders in place; sew lining in place to wrong side. Block; do not press.

PLAIN VERSION
With MC throughout, work as given for Plain Version with Striped Ribbing.
