Yes, You Should Use Eye Cream. Here’s Why

Is eye cream a skincare must-have or an unnecessary splurge? A dermatologist explains.

In the age of seven-step skincare routines and a constant barrage of new products, it’s natural to be curious about where we can cut corners. For many, eye cream seems like a good place to start.

These silky creams may feel delightful on the skin, but are they really necessary when we’re already using hydrating toners, serums, and facial moisturizers? Sorry to disappoint, but we wouldn’t recommend skipping this step.

“Eye creams are products dedicated for a delicate area, and often do more than simply provide hydration,” says Dr. Monica Li, a dermatologist and the founder of Vancouver Skin MD

Many of these products, tailor-made for thin skin, are chock full of ingredients that can decrease puffiness, reduce dark circles, or support collagen production.

Here’s what you need to know about eye creams, from when you should start using one to Dr. Li’s favourite picks.

Is there a difference between eye cream and facial moisturizer?

While they may look or feel the same, face and eye creams have different formulations. “Many eye creams are specifically tested on and evaluated for their effects on the skin around the eyes,” says Dr. Li.

Our eyes have the most sensitive skin on the face, thus revealing the first signs of aging. Some ingredients in facial moisturizers, such as salicylic acid, can be irritating on the delicate eye area. Any active ingredients in eye creams are at concentrations appropriate for eyes.

When should you start using eye cream?

Dr. Li typically recommends beginning your foray into the world of eye cream around the age of 30 when early signs of aging start to appear.

If you’re concerned with under eye puffiness or dark circles, you might consider incorporating an eye cream with targeted ingredients into your routine even earlier.

What’s the best way to apply eye cream?

“Be gentle,” stresses Dr. Li. “Vigorous, repeated rubbing of the under eye skin can add to increased pigmentation, lines, and dullness in the area.”

Apply a pea-sized amount to each eye, then lightly tap the product into your skin.
