Is Jalapeño Sauvignon Blanc The Drink Of The Summer?

This pairing is a crisp and unexpectedly refreshing summer sip.

When you think about a summer bevvy, your mind may immediately go to a juicy Aperol spritz or a zingy-citrusy margarita. If you want to test out a new happy hour go-to this summer, might we suggest jalapeno wine?

The drink is just as it sounds—a chilled glass of wine (usually sauvignon blanc or rosé) served with a dash of sliced jalapenos.

This surprising pairing is making its way around social media, with sommeliers and amateur cocktail enthusiasts alike urging vino lovers to give it a try.

Believe it or not, the jalapenos aren’t just for show; there is a scientific reasoning behind why this duo makes sense, particularly with Sauvignon Blanc.

Like many reds, Sauvignon Blanc naturally contains pyrazines, a chemical compound that gives it a green bell pepper or celery flavour. The spiciness of jalapenos enhances these notes.

For the best balance, some sommeliers recommend choosing a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. These wines are known to be extra fruity, which can help balance out the intensity brought on by the jalapenos.

Pro tip: we recommend doling out small pours once you’ve added in your jalapeno. The longer the jalapeno sits in the wine, the spicier it gets. Smaller portions make it easier to control the flavour intensity.

Sip on, cocktail lovers!
