In bowl, vigorously mix butter, yogurt, ginger, cilantro, garam masala, cumin, turmeric, garlic, and lime zest and juice. Using hands, brush chicken with about three-quarters of curry mixture. Place chicken in airtight container and marinate in refrigerator for 1 to 4 hours. Set aside remaining curry mixture in refrigerator. (Make-ahead: Marinating chicken can be refrigerated overnight or frozen for up to 2 months. Curry mixture can be covered and refrigerated overnight or stored in airtight container and frozen for up to 2 months.)  

Preheat barbecue to medium heat (about 350°F), lighting only one or two burners (in preparation for cooking over indirect heat); grease grill. Place chicken on grill over unlit burners. Close lid and grill, turning chicken and brushing with reserved curry mixture halfway through grilling time, until juices run clear when meat is pierced with fork, 40 to 45 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
