Method
In saucepan of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to package directions for al dente. Reserve 1 cup of cooking liquid; drain pasta.
Meanwhile, in large skillet, heat 1 tbsp of the oil over medium heat. Add shrimp and cook, stirring often, until opaque, 2 to 3 minutes. Add garlic, tomato sauce, chili paste and basil; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring often, for 1 minute.
Add remaining olive oil and the onion; cook, stirring often, for 2 minutes. Stir in about half of the reserved cooking liquid and bring to boil. Add pasta and cook, tossing to evenly coat pasta with sauce, 1 to 2 minutes.
Remove from heat; stir in Parmesan until melted (add more cooking liquid if necessary). Sprinkle with chopped fresh basil and grated Parmesan, if using.
