A classic cocktail gets a festive twist with a special simple syrup. You'll use only 1 tbsp of the syrup in each cocktail, so store the leftovers in a jar in the fridge to sweeten chai tea or to make a specialty coffee.

Spiced Simple Syrup:

Spiced Simple Syrup: Using bottom of small heavy saucepan, lightly crush cinnamon sticks, allspice, cardamom, star anise and cloves; place in saucepan. Add 2 cups water and ginger; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer until reduced to 2/3 cup, about 20 minutes.

Add sugar, stirring until dissolved. Strain syrup into bowl; let cool.

Makeahead: Refrigerate in airtight container for up to 3 months.

Divide cranberries between 2 oldfashioned glasses. In cocktail shaker or glass measure, stir together ice, whisky, vermouth, bitters and 2 tbsp of the spiced simple syrup until cold.

Strain into prepared glasses.
