In large bowl, beat butter with brown sugar until light; beat in eggs and vanilla. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt; stir into butter mixture to make thick batter. Stir in red food colouring until combined.

Scrape into parchment paper - lined 8-inch (2 L) square cake pan, smoothing top. Bake in 325 F (160 C) oven until cake tester inserted in centre comes out with a few moist crumbs clinging, 25 to 30 minutes.

Let cool in pan on rack for 10 minutes. Transfer to rack; peel off paper. Let cool completely.

Cream Cheese Icing:
In large bowl, beat butter with cream cheese until light and fluffy; beat in vanilla. Beat in icing sugar, in three additions, until smooth; beat in salt. Transfer 1/4 cup of the icing to small bowl; tint with yellow food colouring to desired shade for beaks. Cover yellow icing with damp towel to prevent drying out; set aside. Spread remaining icing over blondies, smoothing top. Refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes. Cut into 16 squares.

Using 1-inch (2.5 cm) teardrop-shaped cookie cutter or scissors, cut 32 shapes from fruit leather for bird bodies. Using 3/4-inch (2 cm) teardrop-shaped cookie cutter or scissors, cut 64 shapes from fruit leather for wings. Arrange two bird bodies, close to edge and facing each other, on each square; press two wings together, offsetting slightly, and press onto each body. Place one heart-shaped candy in centre above each pair of birds.

Spoon reserved yellow icing into piping bag fitted with small plain tip; pipe kissing beaks onto birds. Press 1 sesame seed eye onto each bird.
