In large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring often, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring often, for 1 minute. Reserving a few pieces of asparagus for garnish, add remaining asparagus to pan and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 6 to 7 minutes.
Stir in broth; bring to boil. Cover and reduce heat to low; simmer, stirring occasionally, until asparagus is very tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in lemon zest and juice. Transfer soup to blender or, using handheld blender, purée until smooth. Return soup to saucepan; stir in cream and season with salt and pepper. Cook until soup is heated through, 3 to 5 minutes. Divide among bowls and top with reserved asparagus pieces. Serve with lemon wedges and baguette slices, if using.
