5 Healthy Foods That Are Even Better For The Environment: Study

Did you know that the best foods for you are also the best for the planet?

It’s no secret that the foods we know and love have an intrinsic link to our environment. From water and land use to methane emissions, the way we farm and eat can have profound effects on our overall carbon footprint.

A new study from Loma Linda University in California looks at just how close that relationship can be. Researchers looked at the intersection between 30 food groups—including fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat, and processed snacks—and the planet.

The study found that whole foods, such as fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains, are the “most beneficial for both humans and the environment.”

Those with the highest negative impact are red meat and processed meat. Beef, in particular, has an exceptionally high carbon footprint.

To easily understand the data, researchers created a traffic-light inspired chart to map out the link—green for beneficial foods, yellow for medium-impact foods, and red for the highest environmental and health hitters. The most beneficial foods sit in the upper-left corner while the ones with higher negative impacts are on the bottom-right.

“It’s not enough to base our food choices solely on health benefits—we also need to consider their environmental consequences, which ultimately affect human health as well,” says Dr. Joan Sabaté, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Loma Linda University School of Public Health and the study’s senior investigator.
