Is It Bad To Drink Coffee On An Empty Stomach?

Busy mornings can sometimes mean forgoing your usual breakfast for a to-go cup of coffee. However, this swap may not be as harmless as you think.

Coffee is a morning ritual for millions of people every day. It helps wake us up, giving us a boost of energy, and tastes delicious. But its benefits are dependent on how you consume it.

Here’s why you might want to wait until after breakfast for your first cup.

What coffee does to your empty stomach

Coffee can unbalance stomach acidity, leading to digestive pain and discomfort, such as dyspepsia, according to Dr. Sunana Sohi, a gastroenterologist.

“If you experience bloating, nausea, or abdominal pain after your morning coffee, it's probably a sign that it's not going down well on an empty stomach," she told HuffPost

Coffee contains phenols that increase its acidity. Although its pH level is five—compared to that of stomach acid, which is more acidic—it can still stimulate excessive acid production, creating discomfort.

The risks of drinking coffee on an empty stomach

Acid reflux and heartburn: Coffee can relax the esophageal sphincter and encourage the flow of stomach acid, especially if you have GERD or ulcers.

Bloating and cramps: For those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), caffeine can speed up bowel movements and cause pain or diarrhea.

Increased jitters: Without food to slow absorption, caffeine enters the bloodstream more quickly. This can result in anxiety, heart palpitations, and general feelings of restlessness.

Blood sugar spike: Some studies have indicated that coffee can marginally raise blood sugar levels, especially if consumed on an empty stomach.
