Can You Drink Too Much Water?

We're constantly told that it's imperative to drink water—but is it possible to drink too much? And if so, what are the impacts on our health?

Yes, it is entirely possible to drink too much water!

Depending on our weight, height, and physical activity level, it is generally recommended to drink between 1.5 and 2.5 litres of water per day. Drinking more than our metabolic needs can lead to over hydration, which has symptoms similar to those of dehydration.

5 effects on the body when you drink too much water

1. Headaches
Too much water can lower blood sodium levels—hyponatremia—and cause swelling of cells, especially those in the brain. This can lead to pressure in the skull, which can cause throbbing headaches, brain damage, and breathing problems. In extreme cases, this water poisoning can lead to seizures, coma, and even death.

2. Colourless Urine
When we drink an adequate amount of water, our urine is pale, but if it becomes transparent, it can signal over-hydration.

3. Hyperhidrosis
If we drink too much water, our body can react by sweating excessively to try to eliminate the excess water from our body: this is known as hyperhidrosis. Most often, we sweat profusely from our hands, feet, armpits, and scalp, but sweat can come from all parts of the body. However, people who suffer from excessive sweating tend to drink more, which creates a vicious cycle. If this is the case, we should consult our doctor quickly to help us regain a good water balance.

4. Swelling
If we notice swelling or discolouration in our hands, feet, and lips, it's a sign that all the cells in our body are dilated and that we may be suffering from hyponatremia: too low a sodium level in the blood. It's important to immediately reduce our water intake.

5. Muscle cramps
Drinking too much water lowers our electrolyte levels, leading to muscle spasms and cramps. It's recommended to replace some of the water we drink with coconut water, which is a great source of electrolytes.

How much water should you drink each day?

The famous 2-litre-per-day rule is a good guideline, but it's not a fixed rule. Several factors can influence our water needs, such as:

  • Height and weight
  • The level of physical activity
  • The outside temperature (the hotter it is, the more quickly you become dehydrated)
  • Diet (it will be necessary to drink more water when our diet is very salty or rich in protein, for example)

So you can aim for 1.5 to 2.5 litres per day, depending on your physical activity level and the temperature.

*We always encourage you to consult your healthcare professional for advice specific to your needs.*
