We've all heard that omega's are good for us by now. But it's not always easy to fit them into our diet. One delicious option includes flaxseeds, which have loads of fibre, antioxidants and of course omega-3.
But most of us have heard that flaxseeds need to be ground up for our body to absorb the nutrients. So unless you use a lot of muscle and a mortar and pestle or you have a really good blender, you're not going to be able to break them down into digestible form. However, a Canadian company based in Nova Scotia, called Omega Crunch has a few ideas on how to get the most out of flax. The company, which has been featured on Dragon's Den, focuses on natural health products and makes them easy. Their flaxseed is hulled (or de-shelled) so that your body can more easily absorb the oil. Otherwise, it just passes through your system (if you know what I mean). They sent me one of their products to try—the Omega Crunch Super Sprinkle. It's a sweet seed blend that contains shelled flax seeds (so you get the fibre-rich shell and the omega-3 rich kernel but they are separated so you can absorb the nutrients while getting some roughage), organic shredded coconut, hulled sesame seeds, organic chia seeds, shelled hemp seeds and some pure maple sugar. I added it to my oatmeal along with some cinnamon and apples and it was delish. The shaker made it easy to use and it was a great way to get extra fibre and some healthy fats for breakfast. I also plan on putting it into my homemade granola bars and healthy cookies. I might even top my salad with it. There's different flavours like cinnamon and garlic but I like the Super Sprinkle for a little breakfast boost.
