3 plank core moves that will test your strength

Stronger core without a single crunch? Nike master trainer Eva Redpath steps up a basic plank with three variations that’ll put your strength to the test.

The plank is one of the most challenging and effective exercises. Consider modifying these moves by lowering your knees to the floor.

 

1. TABLETOP WITH DUMBBELL PULL-THROUGH

Start Here: Begin in a tabletop position with your hands under your shoulders and your knees under your hips with your toes tucked under. Position a dumbbell behind your left wrist, then lift your knees off the floor.

1. Keeping your hips level with the floor, grab the dumbbell with your right hand and slide it to the right side of your body, extending your arm.

2. place your right hand under your right shoulder, then grab the dumbbell with your left hand and slide it to the left side of your body, extending your arm. repeat, alternating hands.

 

2. PLANK WITH DUMBBELL PUSH AND PULL

Start Here: Begin in a plank position with your elbows under your shoulders. Position a dumbbell in front of your left hand.

1. Keeping your hips level with the floor, push the dumbbell forward with your left hand, extending your arm, then pull it back to the starting position; repeat. Complete the reps with your left arm before switching to your right arm.

 

3. SIDE PLANT WITH REVERSE FLY

Start Here: Begin in a side plank position with your right elbow under your right shoulder and your feet stacked. Holding a dumbbell in your left hand, lift your left arm to shoulder height parallel to the floor.

1.  Stabilizing your hips and torso, raise your left arm toward the ceiling, then lower it back to the starting position; repeat. complete the reps with your left arm before switching to your right arm.
