Family wellness makeover: Month 3

This is Month 3 into the yearlong makeover of the Morfidis family -- Despina and George and their two children, Ria and Stefi. Here are some of their recent milestones.

Regular exercise is now a part of Despina's previously exercise-void life. She gets up at 5:15 a.m. at least three times a week for her 10- to 15-minute workout on the cross trainer and a 6 a.m. weight training appointment at the GoodLife Fitness Club with trainer Sue Forest. She's feeling time-starved, but results are keeping her motivated. After nine weeks of going to the gym, she has lost 13.5 pounds and 12.5 inches (most coming off her waist, hips and calves). "I am so excited," she says.

Meanwhile, George's efforts have finally started to pay off, too. He's down 11 pounds and 7.5 inches (most are off his chest and waist). Thanks to Forest's support, he works out at least three times a week. And he's on a regular schedule for meals and snacks that begins at home with cereal at 6:30 a.m. "I'm spacing my food throughout the day and making lower fat, healthier choices," he says.

After triathlon training at Olympia Sports Camp in Huntsville, Ont., Ria, 13, swam 350 metres, cycled 10 kilometres and ran three kilometres for the final triathlon in a time of one hour 10 minutes and was very happy with that.

Despite a sore knee and cramps for part of the race, Stefi, 10, finished the triathlon in one hour 26 minutes -- and was pleased to come in under an hour and a half!
