5 Wardrobe Strategies To Organize Your Closet

Take a cue from lifestyle expert and TV host Natalie Langston, who recently gave her primary closet a stunning makeover. Discover her secrets to creating a closet that’s not only practical but also a beautiful part of your home.

So, let’s talk about the problems I was facing with my closet. First off, there just wasn’t enough space for all the clothes I owned. My wardrobe was bursting at the seams, and clothes were always getting crammed into drawers and dressers, making it hard to find anything. On top of that, clutter seemed to accumulate overnight, making it almost impossible to maintain any semblance of organization. Ineffective storage solutions only added to the frustration. Sound familiar?

Enter Sarah Gerber and Jen Rowe, professional home organizers with NEAT Method, who worked their magic to hit all the goals I had for the space. They focused on improving functionality with easy-to-maintain storage solutions, cohesive storage options, and even seasonal and colour-coded clothing organization. It was like having a professional makeover—but for my closet! With these five key strategies, you too can transform your closet into a beautifully organized space that reflects your style while maximizing functionality.

5 steps to organize your closet

1. Edit with intention

The first step to a spacious closet is a good old-fashioned edit. Jen and Sarah’s golden rule? Keep only what’s your best, your favourite, and what’s necessary (donate the rest and toss anything that’s severely damaged). A shocking statistic from the Daily Mail suggests that we wear only 20 percent of our clothes 80 percent of the time. So why let the other 80 percent clutter your space? Pull everything out and categorize it. Trust me, this process is as liberating as it sounds. By focusing on keeping only what truly adds value to your wardrobe, you’ll not only free up space but also gain a renewed appreciation for the items you decide to keep.

2. Invest in space-saving products

Switching to slim, space-saving hangers can make a massive difference. I swapped my bulky wooden hangers for NEAT Method’s Everyday Hangers. This simple change allowed me to hang more clothes while maintaining breathing space between garments. It was like an instant closet expansion without any construction!

3. Master the art of folding

To maximize visibility and accessibility, try file folding the clothes in your dresser. For tidy open shelves, consider using NEAT Method’s Oxford bins as “drawers.” It’s all about creating a system that works for you and your space.

4. Rotate your wardrobe

Changing your wardrobe with the seasons not only refreshes your style but also optimizes your closet space. Rotate out-of-season clothes, stashing them in storage bins. This keeps your current wardrobe streamlined and easy to navigate.

5. Utilize vertical space

Don’t let valuable vertical space go to waste. Install cabinets, extra shelving or use stackable storage solutions to keep your items organized and within reach. This strategy is perfect for shoes, bags, and accessories that often get lost in the shuffle. I worked with the team at STOR-X Organizing Systems, which specializes in custom wardrobe designs, to take my vision and create a cabinetry system that maximized vertical storage and enhanced the overall look of the space, transforming my cramped closet into something functional and beautiful.

Bonus tips for organization:

  • Categorize your clothes, grouping by type and season. This makes it much easier to find what you’re looking for and keeps things organized.
  • Invest in quality hangers and bins. Matching hangers and storage bins can make a big difference in the overall look and functionality of your closet.
  • Label everything. Labels let everyone in the household know where things go, which is a huge help in maintaining organization.
  • Use drawer dividers. These are lifesavers for keeping things tidy and making the most of your drawer space.
