Budget is always a factor when looking to revamp your home. And while housing and rental costs are on the rise, along with the price of materials, people still want spaces they love and feel reflect their style.

According to data from Yelp, people are searching for more DIY solutions for every area of the home. Home-improvement requests were up on the platform from 2023 to 2024, with 376 percent more requests for gardeners, 89 percent more requests for painters, and 81 percent more requests for interior designers. Whether your living room needs a facelift or your outdoor space looks more like a bed of weeds than a garden, there's a way to invest in your space that works for you.

1. Time for fun

Carpets are out, hardwood floors are in. Refinishing original surfaces to add character is one trend we can all get behind. From fireplaces to stain glass, it's all about showing off the personality your home has always had. 

 

2.  Peaceful slumber

We all know how important sleep is for our health, and having a bedroom that facilitates a good night of rest is key in supporting that relationship. Some of the top searches included soundproofing (up 137 percent), blackout curtains (up 219 percent), and pillow stores (up 69 percent).

Here are a few other easy ways to upgrade your sleep and get a cooler nights' rest.

 

3. Destination Home

One pandemic-era trend that isn't going anywhere is the way we're turning our homes into a one-stop-shop for everything we need, including entertainment. People are turning their basements into all kinds of fun, with numbers up in the search for pool tables (up 120 percent), sound system installation (up 89 percent), and home theatre installation (up 562 percent). 

 

4. Home is where the heart is

Both homeowners and renters are trying to become more self-sufficient (especially with the costs of food and goos one the rise). Whether people are looking for live chickens (up 424 percent), how to build coops (up 163 percent), or just bringing more greenery onto their properties (up 58 percent), it looks like the idea that home is where you can go for farm-to-table meals and ingredients, like herbs, lettuces, and eggs, is becoming more of a necessity. 

 

5. Mind your money

Sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference when it comes to transforming your space. Hardware replacement on cabinets (up 91 percent) and antique market and salvage yard searches (up a combined total of 75 percent) are just a few easy people are making upgrades on a budget.

 

6. Bring on the sun, snow, and rain

As extreme weather continues to blow through the seasons, people are looking to protect the spaces their working so hard on. Solar-installation company searches have risen by 3,534 percent and fire protection service searches are up by 49 percent. Hurricane shutters, EV-charging stations, and home energy conservation ideas were also some of the major trends.
