Freshen Up for Fall: It’s Easy with this Ultimate Guide to an Uber-Clean Home
Autumn is the perfect season for a satisfying cleanup.
Over the warm summer months, dust and allergens accumulate, so a deep clean will energize and transform your home into a healthy space. And bonus: It gives you an opportunity to do double-duty—as you clean, you can sort and organize, refreshing the rooms, and removing and donating items that you don’t use anymore. You’ll get excited about your home all over again. Here’s a quick room-by-room guide to get your home ready.
1. In the bedroom
Use a telescoping duster to grab dust and cobwebs over the walls and in high corners, then dust all surfaces. Launder all of the bedding, including comforters. Grab a Scotch-Brite® Greener Clean™ Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge and warm water to wipe down light switches, fixtures, trim and baseboards. More than 50% of the sponge is made with materials originating from plants, so you'll feel better with a clean and healthy home that's easy on the environment too. Next, clean windows and mirrors. Vacuum the floor. Empty the closet and wipe down the walls before returning the clothes. Sweet dreams! Bonus: This is an ideal opportunity to organize the closet and donate items you no longer wear.
Don’t forget to clean: The mattress! Sprinkle baking soda on top of the mattress; let stand for an hour, then vacuum the mattress. And don’t forget to vacuum the sides of the mattress too.
2. In the bathroom
Clean walls and windows, making sure to get into all the nooks and spots that you don’t get to on a regular basis, like wiping drawer pulls and light switches, cleaning the door and inside cabinets, tossing expired items. Clean mirrors. Spray all surfaces (sink, counters, tub, tiles) with a green all-purpose cleaner, then wipe clean with a Scotch-Brite® Greener Clean™ Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge. Wash the shower curtain; replace the liner if necessary.
Don’t forget to clean: All the areas that people touch on a regular basis like doorknobs, light switches and handles. Clean and sanitize frequently used items regularly with antibacterial wipes or spray cleanser as they can harbour germs that can cause illness.
3. In the living/dining areas
Use a telescoping duster to grab dust and cobwebs over the walls and in high corners, then dust all surfaces. Spot-clean upholstery; launder curtains, blankets and pillow covers. Wipe light fixtures, trim and baseboards. Clean the windows. Vacuum the floor and shampoo the rugs. Wipe down all the furniture, using lemon oil on wood furniture and floors.
Don’t forget to clean: Under the rugs. Sure, you vacuum, but it’s always a good idea to lift and vacuum under the rugs as well, because crumbs, dust and debris can sneak in underneath.
4. In the kitchen
Using a Scotch-Brite® Greener Clean™ Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge and a bucket of warm water with green cleaning solution, wash walls and cabinets, and wipe down trim and baseboards—just ensure to use the sponge side. Empty the drawers and cabinets; clean and wipe out the interiors. Vacuum under the stove and fridge. Organize and clean up any spills inside the fridge with the scouring side of the sponge. Clean the oven and microwave. Sanitize counters, wipe out the sink and clean the drain. Wipe around the area where garbage and recyclables are stored. Mop the floor.
Don’t forget to clean: On top of appliances and hardware. Use a sponge with warm water and cleanser to clean along the top of cabinets, microwave, fan, fridge, windowsills and doorframes. For even tougher messes, reach for a Scotch-Brite® Greener Clean™ Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge to clean oven racks or grill gates.
It's time to fall in love with your home again by giving it the extra attention and clean it deserves. Bring on those cozy fall days indoors.
