How To Attract Fireflies To Your Backyard

Light up your yard with these simple tips.

There are few things more dazzling on a summer evening than the glimmers of fireflies flitting around your yard. Though the insects only light up for a couple of weeks of their lifespan, they give off a glow unlike any other.

With their populations in decline, it’s harder and harder to spot them in the wild. Here are a few things you can do to attract fireflies onto your property.

1. Have a wild garden

Just like pollinators, fireflies love a wild garden. Unruly wildflowers, local flora, as well as fallen leaves and logs, encourage the insects to lay their eggs in your yard.

2. Limit light pollution

One of the biggest reasons why firefly populations are dropping is because of light pollution. Over 80 percent of firefly species found in the U.S. communicate via light. Artificial light not only makes it more difficult for them to see each other and mate, but also makes them more susceptible to predators. Consider dim fairy lights or camping lanterns for less distraction.

3. Eliminate pesticides

Fireflies are particularly vulnerable to insecticides and pesticides. As a bonus, fireflies feed on snails, slugs, and grubs—just some of the pests you may be trying to get rid of in the first place.

4. Add a water feature

Water features are peaceful and beautiful for humans, and an ideal breeding ground for fireflies. The insects gravitate towards moving bodies of water, such as a waterfall or fountain, but a pond also works well.

5. Plant a pine tree

Native pine trees are a dark, safe space for fireflies to rest during the day. They’re also a great spot for larvae growth.
