These tiny candy boxes will delight your sweetheart – no matter how old he or she is. Fill them with chocolate, candy or tiny trinkets and get ready to feel the love!

This pattern makes a box that is about 9 cm (3-1/2 inches) wide and 2.5 cm (1 inch) high, though the size may be customized to fit your needs.

You need:
  • Scrap card stock (approx 9 x 9 cm/ 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches)
  • 1 sheet card stock (approx 23 x 30 cm/9 x 12 inches) in desired colour*
  • Markers, alphabet stamps with ink, alphabet stickers, or computer word-processing program and colour printer
  • Pencil, ruler and scissors
  • Clear tape and double-sided tape (1.3 cm/1/2 inch wide)
* You’ll need one sheet card stock per candy box.

To make:

1. Fold scrap card stock in half. With pencil, draw outline of half-heart, starting from folded corner and ensuring curves touch edges of card stock. With scissors, cut along outline. Unfold card stock to reveal approx 9 cm (3-1/2 -inch) wide heart stencil. Set aside.

2. Using pencil, ruler and scissors, divide remaining card stock into two pieces: about 12.5 x 23 cm (5 x 9 inches) and 15.5 x 23 cm (6 x 9 inches); discard scrap.

3. With pencil and heart stencil, trace two hearts onto 12.5 cm (5-inch) piece of card stock. With scissors, cut along outlines. Discard scraps.

4. Using markers, alphabet stamps with ink or alphabet stickers, compose short phrase on one heart only. Second heart will remain blank. (If using computer word processing program and colour printer, reverse steps 3 and 4, printing phrase before tracing and cutting hearts.) Set hearts aside.

5. Cut remaining (15.5 cm/6-inch) piece of card stock into four strips, each about 3.5 cm (1-1/2 inches) wide and 22 cm (8-1/2 inches) long. Fold each strip lengthwise, about 2.5 cm (1 inch) from edge. Apply double-sided tape along shorter side of fold. Using scissors, snip up to crease, in 5 mm (1/4-inch) intervals, on taped side. Repeat on remaining three strips.

6. On heart, with text facing down, affix one strip with crease flush along edge of the heart, starting from the bottom tip of the heart, following curve and stopping at peak. Cut strip at the peak. Using second strip, repeat on other half of heart. With clear tape, affix strips together on inside for seamless finish.

7. Repeat Step 6 on blank heart.

8. Slide two hearts together to create a box, text facing up.
