Cosy knits: Legwarmers

Legwarmers are knit on two needles. They have border design on cuff, picot edge trim and ribbing hidden under cuff to provide extra elasticity. Recommended for experienced knitters. Instructions are written for Child's size. Changes for Lady's size are written in brackets. Standard abbreviations are used.

The yarn is available through mail order from Briggs & Little Woolen Mills. To order, visit www.briggsandlittle.com or call 1-800-561-9276.

Size:
Finished calf measurement: Child's 28 cm (11 ins); Lady's 33 cm (13 ins)

You need:
Download graphs and patterns (PDF format requires free Adobe Acrobat Reader)
Briggs & Little 2-ply (100 g) Heritage yarn as follows:
2 skein(s) MC
Small amount of CC
One pair 3.25 mm needles
One pair 4.00 mm needles OR whichever needles you require to produce the tension given below
Tapestry needle

Tension:
18 sts and 27 rows = 10 cm (4 ins) in St st, using larger needles. Work to the exact tension with the specified yarn to obtain satisfactory results.

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK TENSION.

To make:

Note: When knitting border pattern, it will be necessary to break CC yarn to bring yarn to correct end of needle. The coloured design is worked by carrying yarn not in use loosely across back of work, but never over more than 3 sts. Over more than 3 sts, weave it over and under colour in use on next st or at centre of sts it passes over. When changing colours, in order to prevent a hole, pass colour to be used under and around to right of colour just used.

Beg at cuff edge, with MC and larger needles, cast on 50(60) sts.

Work 2 rows in [k1, p1] ribbing.

Beg with a k row, work in St st, following Border Design Graph.

With MC, work 3 rows in St st. Cuff has now been completed.

Picot edge (cuff fold line):
K1, [k2 tog, yon] to last st, k1.

To work leg section:
Change to smaller needles and work 5 cm/2 ins in [k1, p1] ribbing, ending with right side of cuff facing for next row.

Change to larger needles and, beg with k row, work even in St st until work from beg measures 24(30) cm/9-1/2(11-3/4) ins, ending with a p row. Dec 1 st at each end of needle on next and every following sixth row until there are 38(44) sts on needle.

Change to smaller needles and work 5 cm/2 ins in [k1, p1] ribbing.

Cast off loosely in ribbing.

Make second legwarmer.

To finish:
Weave yarn ends on wrong side of work. Steam lightly through a damp cloth. Sew seams. Turn cuffs to outside.
