Knit a cosy cardigan

Instructions are written for Small size. Any changes for Medium, Large and Extra Large are written in brackets. If there is only one figure it applies to all sizes. Standard abbreviations are used. Recommended for knitters with some experience.

Bust/chest measurement:
Small: 76 to 81.5 cm (30 to 32 ins)
Medium: 86.5 to 91.5 cm (34 to 36 ins)
Large: 96.5 to 101.5 cm (38 to 40 ins)
Extra-large 106.5 to 112 cm (42 to 44 ins)

Finished bust/chest measurement:
Small 92.5 cm (36-1/2 ins)
Medium 103 cm (40-1/2 ins)
Large 106.5 cm (42 ins)
Extra Large 117 cm (46 ins)

You need:
4(4,4,5) hanks Kertzer's Butterfly Super 10 Cotton (125 g), No. 3446 Shell Pink
One pair of 4 mm needles
One pair of 4.5 mm needles OR whichever needles you require to produce the tension given below
One 4.5 mm circular needle, 90 cm long
Tapestry needle
Four 4 mm buttons

Tension
20 sts and 26 rows = 10 cm (4 ins) in stocking stitch using larger needles. Work to exact tension with specified yarn to obtain satisfactory results. TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK TENSION.

To make:

BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 171(195,201,225) sts.
Work Border pat as follows:
Row 1 (right side): [K3, cast off 3 sts] to last 3 sts, k3. 87(99,102,114) sts.
Rows 2 through 6: [K1, p1] to end of row. These 6 rows form Border pat.

Row 7 (right side): Change to larger needles and knit, inc 4(2,3,1) sts evenly across row. 91(101,105,115) sts now on needle.
Work next 3 rows even in St st.

Row 11 (right side): K14(16,16,17), [work first row of Chart, k9(11,12,14)] 4 times, k5(5,5,6).
Row 12: P5(5,5,6), [p9(11,12,14), work 2nd row of Chart] 4 times, p14(16,16,17).
Keeping continuity of pattern, work to end of chart.
Row 24 (wrong side): Purl.

Next: Work even in St st until work from beg measures 30.5(33,35.5,38) cm/12(13,14,15) ins, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape armholes:
Cast off 4 sts at beg of next and foll row.
Next: Dec 1 st at each end of needle on next 7 rows, then on foll 3(5,0,0) alt rows. 63(69,83,93) sts now on needle.

Work even in St st until work from beg of armhole measures 20(20,21.5,23) cm/8(8,8.5,9) ins.

To shape shoulders:
Cast off 6(7,9,10) sts at beg of next 4 rows, then cast off 5(6,8,10) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Cast off rem 29(29,31,33) sts.

LEFT FRONT
*With smaller needles, cast on 87(99,105,111) sts, then work Border pat as given for Back. 45(51,54,57) sts now on needle.

Row 7 (right side): Change to larger needles and knit, inc 0(2,0,0) sts at centre of row. 45(53,54,57) sts now on needle.
Work next 3 rows even in St st.

Row 11 (right side): K3(7,7,9), [work first row of Chart, k6] twice, work first row of Chart, k3(7,8,9).
Row 12 (wrong side): Purl.
Keeping continuity of pattern, work to end of chart.

Row 24 (wrong side): Purl.
Next: Work even in St st until work from beg measures 30.5(33,35.5,38) cm/12(13,14,15) ins, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape armhole and neck:
Cast off 4 sts at beg of next row. Work 1 row even.
Next: Dec 1 st at each end of needle on next 7 rows, then on foll 3(5,0,0) alt rows. Dec 1 st at neck edge only on foll 4(5,10,9) alt rows. 17(20,26,30) sts now on needle.

Cont even in St st until work from beg of armhole measures 20(20,21.5,23) cm/8(8,8.5,9) ins, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape shoulder:
Cast off 6(7,9,10) sts at beg of next and following alt row. Work 1 row even. Cast off rem 5(6,8,10) sts.*

RIGHT FRONT
Work from * to * as given for Left Front, reversing all shaping.

SLEEVES
With smaller needles, cast on 93 sts, then work Border pat as given for Back, inc 1 st in centre of last row. 49 sts now on needle.
Change to larger needles and cont in St st, inc 1 st at each end of needle on 3rd, then foll 8th(8th,8th,6th) rows 5(6,12,8) times to 61(63,75,67) sts, then every 10th(10th,10th,8th) rows 6(5,1,7) times. 73(73,77,81) sts now on needle.
Cont even in St st until work from beg measures 41.5(43,44.5,45) cm/16.5(17,17-1/2,17-3/4) ins, ending with right side facing for next row.

To shape sleeve cap:
Cast off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then cast off 3 sts at beg of foll 2 rows. 57(57,61,65) sts now on needle.
Next: Dec 1 st at each end of needle on every alt row 4 times. 49(49,53,57) sts now on needle.
Next: Dec 1 st at each end of needle on every 4th row 2(2,2,3) times, then on every foll alt row 2(2,3,3) times.
Next: Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows, then cast off 3 sts at beg of foll 2 rows.
Next: Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then cast off 4 sts at beg of foll 2 rows. 13(13,15,17) sts now on needle. Cast off.

To finish:
Sew shoulder seams.
Work button band: With circular needle, right side facing and beg at bottom edge of Right Front edge, pick up and knit 57(61,66,71) sts up Right Front, 39(39,41,43) sts along Right Front neck edge, 29(29,31,33) sts across Back neck edge, 39(39,41,43) sts along Left Front neck edge and 57(61,66,71) sts down Left Front edge. 221(229,245,261) sts now on needle.
Row 1 (wrong side): Knit.
Row 2: K2(3,3,4), [k2tog, yon twice (buttonhole made), k15(16,18,19] twice, k2tog, yon twice, knit to end of row.
Row 3: Knit, dropping one loop off the previous row's yon and knitting the next loop.
Rows 4 and 5: Knit.
Cast off knitways.

Sew in sleeves. Sew sleeve seams. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes. Pin to measurements; block.
