Whether you believe in astrology or not, seeing yourself reflected in your zodiac sign is undoubtedly fun (and sometimes pointedly revealing). Not only is it another entry point on your personal journey to learning about who you are, but it’s also a way for you to understand those around you better.

“Astrology helps us become more self-aware,” says Tati Petkovic, a Toronto-based astrologer. “It’s a language for us to dive deep into what works for us and for our energy.”

Petkovic believes your birth chart—your personal astrological chart based on the time and place you were born—can shed light on your strengths and weaknesses, family patterns and how you express yourself in relationships. It can help explain why a romantic partnership ended or why a dream job isn’t panning out. “The elements help us understand compatibility because they explain why some connections flow more easily,” she says.

While zodiac sign compatibility isn’t a relationship dealbreaker—there’s so much more depth and nuance to compatibility between birth charts—some elemental signs tend to simply click. Connecting with other zodiac signs in your element—like Aries and Sagittarius, both fire signs—is natural.

Another facet of astrological compatibility is partnership signs. These sun signs are polar opposites on the zodiac, lending to an opposites-attract mentality. “When I look at birth charts with partnership signs, there is this interesting mutual understanding, but they’re also seeing things from different perspectives,” says Petkovic. “There’s a natural attraction to them.”

Despite differing points of view, people with successful partnership signs—such as Aquarius and Leo—can be great romantic partners or business collaborators. “That tension can feel very attractive, but you can butt heads in some cases as well,” Petkovic says. Finding common ground and respect for each other are key to these pairings.
