A visit to Utah Olympic Park

Early last year, I had the chance to visit Park City, Utah. During my trip, where I discovered hidden gems in Utah's scenic and beautiful ski town, I was also able to check out Utah Olympic Park. This was the first time I'd seen a stadium associated with the Winter Olympic Games so I was pretty excited to see how this famous space is currently being used. I quickly learned that the home of the 2002 Winter Games is currently very much in use. With everyone from aspiring athletes and future Olympians using the facilities, to current competitors from around the world doing trial runs on the various tracks, Utah's Olympic Park is buzzing with activity. The park even offers guided tours for visitors, which comes complete with an opportunity to stand "where the athletes stood" before they participated in their event. I had a chance to stand atop the slope where the aerial skiers took off, and let me tell you -- it was terrifying and exciting, all at once! It's so inspiring to know that these people go out there and perform these amazing acts of athleticism without any fear. Just check out this view (pictured below). The bobsledding track is also something to check out because if you're brave enough, you too can take a turn in a Comet bobsled ride! Yes, the stadium also facilitates bobsledding runs through the Olympic track, but it depends on weather conditions. (Part of track pictured below.) If you do it, however, prepare to brace yourself for 15 turns, reaching speeds close to 125 km per hour, and experience up to 5 Gs of force. In addition to these activities, the park also offers offers zip-lining, adventure courses, skeleton rides, and there's even a museum that highlights events, iconic moments and stories leading up to the 2002 Utah Winter Olympic Games. I can't tell you how much this visit inspired me and gave me a greater respect for all the Olympians who participate in these games. Good luck, Team Canada! We're looking forward to the 2014 Sochi Winter Games! Photography by Simone Castello
