Veronika Scott is an amazingly inspirational young woman and a breath of fresh air in a crumbling world. She has figured out a way to shrink Detroit's homeless community...one coat at a time. [HTML1] Veronika grew up as a child of addicts and believes that kids like her are set up for failure. She references it to being in a hole and having to climb their way up. She got a great scholarship to college and one particular class changed the course of her entire life. The class assignment was to design something that would fill an actual need. After doing her research at a homeless shelter, she created a coat that looks like a regular jacket during the day and turns into a sleeping bag during the night. One particular day when she was handing our coats to the homeless community, a woman ran out of the shelter and yelled "We don't need coats. Coats are pointless. We need jobs." Veronika felt that she was completely right. "A coat is just a band-aid for a systemic issue and what really would have the impact was hiring the population that would need them in the first place" The idea of self worth is huge in Veronika's eyes. Today, Veronika hires only individuals from homeless shelters and trains them. She gives them the power to take control of their lives, become more independant and take pride in their accomplishments. "I'm happy to be working for a cause. There's no greater joy knowing that I can come into work and make this coat and help somebody that was in my position." says one of her employees. Veronika Scott is a beacon of light and a ray of hope for Detroit's homeless community. She is giving them way out of poverty and despair with dignity and respect. Our world needs more of that.
