  I was thinking about whether birthdays change once you become a mom. For me my sense of generational ties -- that my mother became a mother in conceiving and having me, and so on and so forth -- definitely changed. But my own birthday maybe fell in proportion to my kids'. I definitely spend more time planning their birthday parties than I ever have my own! That said, everyone deserves a great birthday cake and I have a patriotic pick for Kate Middleton's birthday celebration: Canada's Best Raspberry Layer Cake, of course.
