Words for the Wise (or The Onset of Boot Season)

My friend Julie has a phenomenal business she runs with her sister and sisters-in-law called Mabel’s Labels. Her products are invaluable, not just for my kids but also for me.  Every piece of photography equipment I have is blatantly branded with bright, easily identifiable labels, so I never have to worry about someone walking off with, well anything. The bairn know that everything that comes into the house gets a new tag, and for good reason.  In case you think I’m being obsessive, let me tell you about my friend Felicia. Last year, her daughter Annie was dying for a pair of trendy pink boots.  But about 2 days after she’d gotten them, she started complaining of a sore foot. Innocent enough, happens to the best of us - especially in heels. But this was an 8 year old. As Annie continued to complain, Felicia massaged the foot, looked for bumps, checked for bruises –nothing.  She thought that maybe the boots needed to be broken in a bit and it would let up once her daughter’d worn them a little more. But the next day?  Same thing. By day 3, she’d started limping, and on day 4 Felicia called the doctor and made an appointment. At the office, before even seeing the doctor, the nurse looked at Annie oddly and asked her to take the boots off.  She picked them up and looked at the bottoms. “Why does Annie have one boot 3 sizes smaller than the other?” AHA!!! Because none of them were labeled, Annie had accidentally swapped right boots with the girl in the next locker. And the other kid?  Well she’d kept slipping out of the boot and falling in the yard – her mother just thought she was clumsy… Moral of the story is go support a great mompreneur and make sure you always label everything!!
