3 Money-Saving Tips For Travelling In Canada This Summer

Road trips, smaller airports, early flights—these are the best ways Canadians can travel this Canada Day long weekend.

Summer 2025 is all about domestic travel for Canadians. This long weekend, travel search engine KAYAK is reporting a 25 percent spike in domestic flight searches compared to last year.

Though the cost of travel hasn’t changed too much despite a surge in cross-country interest, there are ways to make your trip cheaper—even on the long weekend.

Here are KAYAK’s top tips for travel this Canada Day.

Visit a cheaper destination

Whether you want to escape to the coast or a vibrant urban hub, there are plenty of affordable places to choose from. Winnipeg—which has seen a 48 percent increase in searches this summer—is the cheapest city to visit this long weekend, with average airfare sitting around $220. Edmonton, Vancouver, and Calgary follow close behind.

Here are a few of the cheapest travel destinations right now:

  1. Winnipeg, Manitoba
  2. Edmonton, Alberta
  3. Vancouver, British Columbia
  4. Calgary, Alberta
  5. Toronto, Ontario
  6. Halifax, Nova Scotia
  7. Montreal, Quebec

Plan a road trip

Planning a road trip? You’re not alone. Road trip searches are up by five percent while rental rates are down by nine percent, which KAYAK calls a “rare combo.”

More than that, over half of rental car searches on the platform are within Canada, an increase that indicates that more Canadians are planning car trips on home turf this summer.

Fly early—and out of smaller airports

For the best deals, get strategic with your planning. Choose a smaller airport like Edmonton International Airport or Billy Bishop in Toronto to avoid delays.

Early morning departures between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. are also more likely to be on time compared to evening flights.
