What Are Reading Retreats? Inside Book Lovers' Favourite New Travel Trend
Calling all book lovers! This new travel trend is all about relaxing and ticking off your To-Be-Read list.
From homegrown roadtrips to so-called "quietcations," there’s no shortage of vacation trends nowadays. Not only do you get to explore a new place, these ideas invite you to lean into a particular piece of travel that truly appeals to you—think, delving into a local food scene or natural surroundings.
The newest trend to try is tailor-made for book worms. Hot off the heels of the rise of BookTok—a side of TikTok dedicated to discussing books—reading retreats are curating welcoming spaces to delve into novels.
These retreats can last anywhere from a weekend to a week, and typically offer dedicated time for reading and discussion. They’re not only a place to catch up on your reading list, they’re also a warm environment to connect with fellow readers.

Most retreats are all-inclusive, and provide food, accommodation, local goodies, and of course, your book. You can find peaceful cabin getaways, retreats in quaint local hotels, or rustic camping trips.
Want to check out an upcoming retreat in Canada? Here are a few that are taking place this fall:
- NorthWind Reads: October 24 to 26, Merrickville, ON
- Books & Shenanigans Reading and Yoga Retreat: November 1 to 4, Salt Spring Island, B.C.
If you can’t make it to an organized retreat, consider planning one of your own with your book club or a few pals. Rent a cabin in the woods, bring along some cozy blankets and discussion questions, and cuddle up for the weekend. Happy reading!
