Family routes: Saskatchewan

If you've ever lived in a Prairie town -- and even if you haven't -- Corner Gas will strike a chord with you. This hit Canadian series about life in small-town Saskatchewan has captured the hearts of viewers across the country in a way that glitzy Hollywood offerings can't hope to compete with.

But from the Doukhobor Dugout House to Craik's Sustainable Living Project, Saskatchewan has so much more than small-town life to offer visitors!

Corner Gas
Set in the fictional town of Dog River, Sask., Corner Gas is filmed on location in the town of Rouleau. If you want to find out more about the setting of Corner Gas, visit CNT Tours.

The Doukhobor Dugout House
An hour north of Saskatoon, near the town of Blaine Lake, is a Doukhobor dugout house (built in the style of houses in the Caucasus) and caves. This area was once home to 46 Doukhobor families (300 people). Group tours, conducted by a guide in period costume, are done on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $4 per person and there is an opportunity at the end of the tour to buy some typical Doukhobor refreshments: freshly baked bread, homemade jam and pyrahi (fruit tarts).

The Qu'Appelle Valley
The chain of four lakes of Saskatchewan's Qu'Appelle Valley offers an oasis in the prairie landscape. Hiking, fishing, horseback riding and cycling make this area ideal for picnics and cottage life, and it offers breathtaking scenery to visitors. Last Mountain Lake is home to the oldest bird sanctuary in North America (opened in 1887). It's also the best place in the world to catch the whooping crane during its fall migration.

History buffs will want to check out the town of Lebret and the century-old Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.

Must try: Katepwa Beach Resort Hotel
The restaurant is rumoured to be among the best dining the province has to offer. (East of Fort Qu'Appelle on Highway 22.)

Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site
If you're in the Qu'Appelle Valley near Fort Qu'Appelle, head a little further east to the Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site for a closer look at life in the good old days.

Craik Sustainable Living Project
Located between Regina and Saskatoon is the town of Craik, known for its Sustainable Living Project. The project was launched in 2001, and is well worth the tour of Craik's demonstration "green" building featuring a range of green energy technologies, alternative construction design, and ecological water and waste handling.

Moose Jaw
Take the fun underground in Moose Jaw, where the Tunnels of Moose Jaw give visitors a glimpse into the hideouts of the bootleggers and bandits of the Roaring '20s. And don't be surprised if you run into Public Enemy Number One: Al Capone.

Relax after your clash with the notorious underworld with a decadent trip to the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa, a four-and-a-half-star resort where you can soak in mineral-rich thermal waters. It's within walking distance of the Tunnels of Moose Jaw.

Must try: Hopkin's Dining Parlour
Dine at Hopkin's Dining Parlour, a three-story mansion built in 1905 and now a Designated Heritage Site. Go for the Victorian decor and antique furnishings; stay for the prime rib and wings.

Last stop: Claybank/Wilcox
The Claybank Brick Plant National Historic Site
From clay to kiln, see how bricks were made in the early 20th century -- this National Historic Site has been around since 1912 and is North America's most intact brick factory from that period.

Hockey fans will want to check out the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, one-time home to more than 90 NHL players.
