Cooking Thai peppers in simple syrup gives you a sweet and spicy flavour booster that can be added to savoury dishes as well as desserts. Try sprinkling some onto stir-fries or pizza, or using them to coat cheese balls. Or, for an unexpected kick, mix them into chocolate cake batter or a curd for lemon squares. Use the reserved syrup to spice up homemade cocktails.

Monica's Mocha Bars

Monica's Mocha Bars

Jul 14, 2005

Years ago Monica Gray shared this recipe for crunchy coffee-and-chocolate bars rolled in sugar. They take so little time to make and are so delicious that they're worth making any time of year. I like to make the most of my cookies, serving them on Christmas Eve — before everyone is sated with platters of them on Christmas Day and over the holidays.

Candy Cane Popcorn Clusters

Candy Cane Popcorn Clusters

Oct 24, 2012

If you like candy canes, you'll love these festive clusters. Using chocolate coating wafers means these minty treats can be stored and enjoyed at room temperature without melting. You can find candy cane powder at cake decorating stores during the holidays, but you can also grind your own in a food processor. Keep this powder in an airtight container if you do it in advance, because the moisture in the air transforms it into a solid piece if it is left uncovered.

Mini Buches de Noel

Mini Buches de Noel

Oct 22, 2014

Using vanilla wafer cookies instead of the traditional sponge cake makes these no-bake miniature buches de Noel (yule logs) an easy make-ahead treat. If you like, shape marzipan into little mushrooms or holly leaves and berries and pipe melted chocolate into twig shapes to decorate the logs as we've done here. Make sure your cream is cold before you begin so it's easier to whip.

Almond Raspberry French Macarons

Oct 1, 2012

These impressive little French jewels are perfectly bite-size and add an elegant touch to a dessert tray. They are notoriously tricky to make, but we've made this recipe as foolproof as possible. They demand all of your attention while making them, but the accolades you'll receive from guests make it all worthwhile. These cookies can easily be reinvented with different flavours of preserves, such as peach or apricot. Or try dulce de leche or chocolate ganache for a richer filling.

Fresh Mint Jelly

Fresh Mint Jelly

Aug 9, 2012

Fresh mint and white wine vinegar create a sweet, tangy jelly that's much nicer than store-bought ones. Once you try it, you'll see it goes with more than just lamb. Try it on zippy cheese canapés, in vinaigrettes or tossed with fruit. You can use any mint for this jelly; spearmint is milder, while peppermint is stronger. Or try lemon mint, pineapple mint, even chocolate mint – or a blend. Just do a taste-test of a small batch of the infusion first.

Grandma Thompson's Prize-Winning Apple Pie

Grandma Thompson's Prize-Winning Apple Pie

Jan 8, 2008

Thanksgiving weekend last year and The Village at Blue Mountain, Ont., was filled with the fragrance of freshly baked apple pies. For the first-ever Quintessential Apple Pie contest, bakers from this apple-growing region that rings Georgian Bay carried their pies – double crust, single crust, lattice top, streusel, Cheddar crust, even a chocolate apple combo – to the judging tables. Collingwood baking enthusiast Brenda Hall took first prize with a classic double-crust pie – a family recipe that's not too sweet but full and juicy with freshly harvested local McIntosh apples.

George's Skinny Pancakes

George's Skinny Pancakes

Apr 30, 2012

In spite of my dad's overwhelming affinity for all things healthy, he's got a fantastic sweet tooth, curbed only by hunks of chocolate cake and my late grandmother's Hungarian skinny pancakes, or palacsinta. He would hover near the stove as she turned out stacks of these airy, milky, thinner-than-crêpes treats, sneaking every other one to slather with jam (plum or cherry) and stuff in his mouth. Sprinkle these with cinnamon sugar and roll them up, or spread them with jam. They can also be enjoyed along with savoury soups or stews, such as paprikash or goulash, to scoop up the juices. – Rheanna Kish
