Exciting face masks you’re going to want to try

Forget simple sheet masks or skin-care products that leave you wondering whether they work. Here are few of our favourite face masks that offer impressive results in new techniques and formulations.

There's a reason why the beauty team here at Canadian Living loves masking—this product is highly customizable and offers targeted treatment. At the very least you're likely to walk away with glowing, hydrated skin. They're easy to do, and we'll often to them when reading, watching TV or working—but they're also a great excuse to sit back and relax for ten to twenty minutes as well.

But our regular sheet and cream masks may be taking a back seat to these interesting releases. From a Halloween-style light mask to magnets, here are the skin-care masks you need to get your hands (and face) on.

Dry rub

This dry sheet mask from makeup artist extraordinaire, Charlotte Tilbury isn’t called magic for no reason. The claims? It reduces wrinkles, smooths, brightens, lifts and hydrates. Making it one serious anti-aging mask. The dry nature of the mask (most sheet masks come soaked with ingredients like water and glycerine) allows for a prolonged release of active ingredients instead of oversaturation. Which means you get up to 8 hours of glowing effects, after just 15 minutes of wearing the mask. The ingredients include vitamin B3 which brightens and tones, crocus bulb extract which supports reconstruction and collagen production, and peptides to reduce wrinkles.

Peel and reveal

This brand might be most well known for being the skin care preference of Marilyn Monroe, but we’re partial to the treatment masks. Aside from being kind of fun to do (when applied correctly, they turn rubbery and peel off in one strip), they also contain potent ingredients to help brighten, correct or moisturize your skin. Our pick is the incredibly hydrating Hyra-Therapy Skin Vitality Treatment (the pink mask) which comes packed with Provitamin B5 (a moisutrizer and antioxidant supporter), comfrey root (to soothe) and zinc extract (to calm and treat pollutant damage).

Magnetic field

This sheet mask kicks it up a notch from other serum-soaked masks and adds magnetic force to the beauty equation. The magnets are in the mask, and help increase blood flow and stimulate new cells all while improving circulation. Magnetic Therapy has been around for a long time, but is normally used as an alternative medicine and pain treatment (think about those magnetic bracelets that you often see people with arthritis wearing). There is some research that suggests that magnets help to enlarge blood vessel diameter, which increases circulation—which is why Magicstripes wants you to apply them to your face.

Let there be light

Okay, so this mask isn’t quite like the others—but it is something you’re going to want to try out if you’re prone to acne or suffer from regular breakouts. Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Acne Mask is an LED device that treats skin in order to get it clearer and healthier. A combination of 12 blue LED lights (to kill P. acnes, the bacteria that causes breakouts) and 9 red LED lights (which emit a wavelength that penetrates the skin and calms inflammation) do the job. This at-home device is so simple to use—simply wash your face, put the mask on (the sunglasses-style frame makes it easy) and let the mask work for 10 minutes. The device will shut off automatically when you’re done. The mask comes with 30 sessions upon purchase, and then after that you’ll need to pick up another activator to keep using it. Available in September, 2017.

Faux glow

This sheet mask gives you that sun-kissed glow without needing to deal with creams or sprays. Simply decide how tanned you want to be (ranging from 5 minute to 15 minute treatment times), place the mask on your face, and start the clock. After you remove, make sure to blend the serum left behind by the mask into the areas around your hairline, neck and décolleté and around the eyes for perfect, steak- and tanline-free colour on your face. After about 8 hours, you’ll see the full results on the mask. Aside from giving you a tan, this mask also contains hyaluronic acid for an extra dose of hydration.

Buzz worthy

Consider this your upcoming fall splurge purchase. This mask is a tribute to bees and combines honey, propolis and royal jelly for a truly luxurious masking experience. The balm-like texture has an interesting application too. To get the most out of your mask apply the cream to your cleansed face and massage it into the skin for about two minutes. Then, leaving it on, wait about 5 minutes. Then, dampen your hands and continue the massage for another minute before rinsing any residue off. After using, this mask made my skin look incredible—dewy, glowing and even. The catch? The price tag. This exclusive and luxury skin-care line doesn't come cheap, so this is definitely a splurge-treat-yourself style purchase.
